In the early 60's Fred spent two years hitch-hiking around the world playing his bongos on street corners and in villages to earn his keep. It was through this experience he learned first hand that rhythm is a universal language and a drummer will be welcome in countries worldwide.

Fred leavitt has played percussion in a number of bands including the Pan Pros, a steel drum band from Trinidad, Out of Control, a reggae band in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and the Primal Connection, a percussion ensemble from Chicago. His main interests are in using the drum as an educational tool, a healing aid and to bring the races together.

Fred has organized and choreographed drum events for major corporations and institutions throughout the Chicagoland area including the Field Museum and the Chicago Department of Cultural affairs. He also organized Chicago’s largest drum circle with over 10,000 people in attendance.

Fred Leavitt was a founder, manager and player in the Primal Connection, A multi-cultural, world rhythm, percussion ensemble from Chicago. He was also the president of the Primal Connection Foundation, an educational organization that uses percussion to enhance learning and improve cross-cultural relations.

The Primal Connection, a popular group in the city, has opened for the Chicago's Grant Park Symphony Orchestra, has been hired by Chicago's Symphony Orchestra, the Art Instituteof Chicago, and had its own radio show.

The Primal Connection Foundation has pioneered the use of percussion as a cross-disciplinary educational tool to teach algebra concepts to fifth-graders, as well as geography, english, math, sociology and english as a second language. The band has also used percussion to give team-building workshops for corporations such as British Airways and Blue cross Blue Shield
