Education and Training

Education benefits are paid to eligible Veterans, dependents, reservists and service members while in an approved training program. Such programs include the: Montgomery GI Bill, Veterans Educational Assistance Program, Survivors Educational Assistance Program, Dependents Educational Assistance Program

There are time limits associated with each program and there are other qualifications that must be met. To take advantage of one of these programs, talk with an accredited Service Officer at the VSO today.

Burials

The Highlands County VSO offers benefits and services to honor deceased Veterans including: Headstones and Markers, Presidential Memorial Certificate, Burial Flag, Reimbursement for Burial Expenses, Burial in a VA National Cemetery. There is no time limit for claiming reimbursement of burial expenses for a memorial. However, claims must be made within two years of the Veteran’s burial in order to qualify and receive other benefits and services.

Healthcare

The VA offers certain healthcare options for eligible Veterans including: hospital, outpatient medical, dental, pharmacy, and prosthetic services, domiciliary, nursing home, and community-based residential care, sexual trauma counseling, specialized care for women veterans, health and rehabilitation programs for homeless veterans, readjustment counseling, alcohol and drug dependency treatment, medical evaluation for military service exposure including Gulf War Gas, Agent Orange, radiation, and other environmental hazards. The Highlands County VSO can assist the Veteran and their family in obtaining these benefits.

Transportation

The Ridge Area Association of Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 49 provides free transportation to VA Medical Centers, including trips to and from Bay Pines VAMC on Tuesdays and trips to and from the West Palm Beach VAMC on Mondays and Fridays. Requests for rides can be made up to three weeks in advance. The transportation service is for eligible Veterans who have VAMC scheduled appointments between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 11 a.m.
