..Hazardous Waste
The Highlands County Recycling Department provides a Household Hazardous Waste program for proper and safe disposal of various chemicals commonly found around the home.  To assist residents in identifying these potentially dangerous materials, some of these items are listed below:

PAINTS
Oil base - Oil base paints are paints that require mineral spirits for clean up.  Oil base paints can not be landfilled.

Latex - Latex paints are water soluble.  This paint requires only water for clean up and can be disposed of by removing the lid and allowing the paint to dry.  This will make the paint pigments hard to the touch.  When the paint is completely dry it may be put in your regular garbage which is picked up curbside.
Spray Paints - If spray paint is left in the can then it should be disposed of at one of the semi-annual Household Hazardous Waste Collections. Once emptied the cans may be recycled by taking to a local voluntary drop off location.
BATTERIES
Car, boat and truck batteries are accepted at the Recycling Department Monday thru Friday 7:00 a.m. till 3:30 p.m.
Regular alkaline batteries will be accepted at our semi annual Household Hazardous Waste Collections.  You may also recycle these batteries at your local Radio Shack and Wal Mart stores.
OIL, GASOLINE & ANTIFREEZE
Used oil, old gasoline and antifreeze are accepted at the Highlands County Recycling Department Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Pesticides and Herbicides - These chemicals, commonly used on lawns and  gardens, are accepted at our scheduled semi-annual Household Hazardous Waste Collections.
